The nervous system establishes motor “programs” that control human motion, which is comprised of posture and movement. The control of these “programs” is largely established during the first critical years of life. However, it is estimated that 25-35% of all people suffer from at least partial “inhibition” of one or more aspects of correct movement patterns once they reach 4 years of age. This creates lifelong “movement impairments” – or inefficient ways of walking, bending, and playing. Even more people develop muscular imbalances as life progresses. The consequences of this is early degenerative changes (arthritis) and injury. Failing to address this often creates unsuccessful efforts in rehabilitation therapy.
Reflex Locomotion is a technique established by key neurologists/physiatrists, all of whom were giants in the 20th Century rehabilitation movement: Professors’ Vaclav Vojta, Karel Lewit, Vladimir Janda, and Frantisek Vele. In the past 20 years, it’s been advanced significantly by Dr Pavel Kolar, pediatric neurologist in Prague. It is a primary rehabilitation tool for care of stroke patients and patients with cerebral palsy in Europe, and is slowly becoming more known in the United States.
The responses to the stimulation are coordinated movements of the body that restore basic movement patterns which are part of human movement process such as grasping, rolling, creeping, crawling, walking, stabilization and proper breathing stereotype. The brain is “reprogrammed” to correctly use muscles that are weak and this increase in muscle activation helps improve movement quality.
The priority of the treatment is to activate the dysfunctional muscles which are not entirely under our control but may play a role of a key link in a certain dysfunction. At JointFit, this amazing therapy is just one more tool that we incorporate to help achieve the best outcomes possible.
